Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper says Jurgen Klopp wants to replace Simon Mignolet

first_imgFormer Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar says he has been asked to stop publically criticising Simon Mignolet by the Reds but claims Jurgen Klopp is looking to replace the Belgian stopper.Mignolet has not been the commanding presence Liverpool would have hoped when they signed him from Sunderland in 2013 and was dropped after a series of match-costing blunders in his debut season.Grobbelaar, who is currently coaching in Newfoundland, Canada, has been outspoken in his condemnation of the Reds no.1 and says Mignolet is far from the complete package.“I’ve had my criticism of him for two or three years, I even got pulled in and asked not to criticise him so openly,” admitted Grobbelaar.“I’ve said that he is a goalkeeper who is a great shotstopper, but he is not the overall package. The overall package is good with your feet and coming out and commanding your area.“I’ve got a goalkeeper in Canada, a 24-year-old, who does this better than Mignolet does and is just as good of a shotstopper. He is more of a package than Mignolet is.”When asked whether he believed Mignolet would remain at Liverpool for the long-term, Grobbelaar said Klopp is already scouting the Bundesliga for a replacement. He added: “I think he is looking at it [buying a replacement for Mignolet]. There are a couple of goalkeepers in the German league that he is looking at so I can see that might be one of his first signings.”last_img
